Flyboys vs Orang Rimba

Match Report
Flyboys vs Orang Rimba
Monday 07 Dec 09
RBA Club

Once again our brave battlers with boots entered the arena in search of fame and glory.
Oh dear.
The team notices said 4 p.m.  When we arrived at about 4:30 we were the second to arrive and things were looking quite grim for a while.  Eventually a rush of arrivals in the minutes before 5 p.m. meant that we had not only a full team but several substitutes and a cheer leader.

My first note about the game says "It is Nasrul's fault"
My second note says "I've checked, and Syazwi does know the Offside rule"
Armed with this information I was ready for the match.

Captain Amir chose his team with the usual cunning tactics and skill that only experience provides.
So when the game started we had the line up as follows

Goalie: Azman
Defence: Haydn   Nasrul   Elmy  Hendra
Midfield: Sofian   Jerry   Hafiz  Ismail
Forwards: Clem   Syazwi

Captain Amir was watching from the sidelines, evaluating how the game was going.
It took just two minutes for Amir to realise that things were going badly.
Haydn missed a tackle and the Orang Rimba left wing was clear.  A long lob over Azman and the Flyboys net bulged.
Orang Rimba 1,  Flyboys nil.

To be fair, the game had just started and everyone was still unsettled and the winger scored a 'once in a lifetime' goal.  Why did it have to be this once and why couldn't he do it in another lifetime ?
Either way the game continued with Flyboys determined to make good the deficit.  My notes say
"Clem gave away a foul and needs to dye his hair"  I don't remember the foul but I do think he should reconsider his choice of hair colour.

Our first chance came after just 5 minutes when Syazwi forced himself into a shooting position. It was a brave piece of football and deserved a better result than just going outside the post.  Bad luck Syazwi, but it was a promising sign.
Two minutes later the same thing happened.  How unlucky can you get ?
Then Haydn collected the ball just inside our half.  He noticed that no one was marking him or making any attempt to tackle him so he started moving forward.
He beat one player and kept going.
He beat a second player and kept going.
He beat a third player and kept going.
The crowd were going wild ! They sensed a brilliant goal was about to come.
Haydn shot.
It hit the post and bounced back into play at Syazwi's feet.  With milliseconds to react, Syazwi blasted the ball*..
Over the bar
The game was firmly in Flyboys control. Most of the play was in just outside the Orang Rimba penalty area and a goal seemed certain to come.
When Orang Rimba did get a break away, Nasrul was rock steady and reliable.  We could depend on him to keep the danger area clear of any threats.
The Orang Rimba did make a lovely cross from their right wing onto a diving header from their centre forward that went over the bar.  I was glad it missed, but it was lovely to watch.

In a tactical move, Syazwi came off after 18 minutes to be replaced by Amir.
Once he got on the pitch Amir had a problem remembering things like THE  BALL !
Several time the ball was passed to him, he trapped it and moved forward leaving the ball behind him.  This seemed to be a contagious condition, because now the ever reliable Ismail started doing the same thing.
Fortunately, Azman was making some good saves in the goal and Jerry was beginning to dominate the centre and even driving forward a couple of times. Lovely to see.
Eventually Flyboys relentless pressure paid.

In the 24th minute, a run down the left wing into the penalty area by Shukrimin left him with only the goalie to beat.  The angle wasn't good. He could have gone for glory and taken the difficult shot.  Instead he did the smart thing.  He looked up and saw Clem completely unmarked on the penalty spot.  A simple pass and the goalie was left with no chance.  Clem neatly slotted the ball into the centre of the net with the side of his foot.
Beautiful.  Simple.  GOAL.
Orang Rimba 1;  Flyboys 1

Numerous substitutions were made in the remaining minutes before half time, including Hendra and Clem coming off and Mohamed and the Cheer Leader (Hj Suhaini) coming on.  After 30 minutes, the Orang Rimbas got their first corner.  They obviously fancied their chances in the air now that Clem was off.  But with Haydn and Nasrul holding firm and Azman solid in goal, the ball went high long and out for a goal kick.  No problem.

The ref started getting a bit whistle crazy and it was fun watching his arm waving and pointing.  Perhaps he had ambitions of becoming a Cheer Leader too.

The referee jumped, spun around, did the splits and pointed at the centre spot while at the same time blowing his whistle.  We took this "Strictly Come Dancing" routine to mean Half Time.
O.K.  so we're having 35 minute halves.
The half time talk by Amir must have been inspiring.  "Go out their and get a goal !" he demanded.
And that is exactly what Haydn did.
About 5 minutes into the second half Orang Rimba made a run down their right wing.  A long hopeful cross to an empty penalty area.  Empty apart from the goalie (Azman) and Haydn.  Haydn decided to clear the ball by blasting it high and long up field.
Unfortunately he completely mis kicked the ball and it skidded off the side of his boot, over Azman's head and into the net.
An own goal.
Oh dear.
Orang Rimba 2;  Flyboys 1

It was not Nasrul's fault.

Orang Rimba sensed victory and started replacing their slower defenders with faster and faster attackers.  This meant that they were defending constantly but looked very dangerous on any counter attack.
It was one of those days for Flyboys.
They shot and missed.  They headed and it went high or wide. They hit the post. They hit the crossbar.  The ball just would not go in the net for Flyboys.
And then the inevitable happened.
Orang Rimba got the break and their lightning fast wingers got free.  A long pass towards the right corner post left Azman in two minds whether to run out there and clear it or stay in goal.  He went out to clear it but changed his mind half way and started to run back to the goal.  This was all the Orang Rimba winger needed. He deftly lobbed the ball over a helpless Azman into the net.
Orang Rimba 3; Flyboys 1

The pace moved up a gear. from
Tired legs and bursting lungs were forgotten as the Flyboys threw everything they had at the Orang Rimba goal trying to regain some pride in the score line.
Amir went in to a 50 / 50 ball with all he had.  His chances unfortunately, went the same way as Flyboys had all game.  He was carried off by Clem and Jerry with a badly injured knee.  Get well soon Amir.

It was always going to happen.  Flyboys were hammering the goal so many times that any second a goal was going to come.
However prayer time came first and the Ref blew the final whistle after 25 minutes of the second half.

As the Flyboys left the field, they behaved as proper gentlemen and congratulated the Orang Rimbas on their victory.  But the Flyboys knew the score line did not reflect the game, and if the game had gone on a little longer, the scoreline would have been quite different.

There were of course, good things to take away from the game.
Syazwi didn't get offside once.
The goals were not Nasrul's fault.
Our mid field was generally in control and passing well.
The wingers didn't stay wide enough but Sofian and Ismail did run extremely well.
The defenders looked solid and Azman looked comfortable in goal.
Like I said, the scoreline does not truely reflect the game.
Just wait until next time.

Cheers,

Allan B

FLYBOYS vs RBRC

December 1st 2009, The Norse God, Thor (god of rain) showed us just how much power was at his will giving us typical weather found in Scotland. Yes it kept pouring rain from the break of dawn till the sun fell. This however did not stop the guys of Flyboys from driving through the rain (good thing I haven’t washed mine yet), whom where very eager to put on the Flyboys jersey and try to make the unbeaten run 7 games with a win over the opponents for the day RBRC.
I can’t quite describe what happen between 4.30-4.45pm as I was still making my way to the field after having a nice shopping spree buying boxers. 4.45pm I got to the field rushed up to the locker room, put on my gear while I was trying to have a pre-match cigarette but was only told off to put out my freshly lit up cigarette and get on the pitch by the one and only Manager/Player Hj Effendy whom told me to play on the left hand side of midfield. I wasn’t there when the manager was giving the formation but from a quick glance around the pitch before I’d take a wild guess that the following was the formation used =P

GK : Nathaniel

RB : Hafiz CB: Nas CB: Azman LB: Hj Effendy

RM: Clem CM: Aziri CM: Somebody LM: Ismail

F: Kenny F: Syazwi

(Note: RBRC were in White jerseys, Flyboys were in Yellow as the officials wore Red)
Kick Off:
The opponents had kicked off the first half and both teams tried to gain control right away, it turned into a non-stop battle in the middle as player’s were slipping and sliding all over the place due to the scientific results of surface + water = no friction hence the result mentioned earlier is obtained =P
Flyboys had some really good chances at goal as did the opponents but luckily our defense despite the frictionless surface managed to hold them off, Kenny tried a pot shot to goal which was denied by the keeper, Syazwi follows up only to be denied yet again by the keeper. Some good crosses into the box, but unfortunately our boots were filled with water we couldn’t jump as high as the sky. Ismail took a free kick which only managed to hit some guy from the wall in the face and quickly took another shot at goal, he hit it hard, tension rises for in a split second Ismail could be celebrating, and yes it’s a bull’s-eye right in the private parts of the very same player, ball bounces into the path of Kenny whom tried his luck, the ball gets past the crowd of defenders but sadly was easily picked up by the goalie.
Not long after intense pressure from  the Flyboys side, the opponents played a ball up front unleashing their right back whom I’d say was in the right place at the right time, took on one or two of the Flyboys defenders with the help of water and gravity, and slotted one pass Nathaniel.

RBRC 1 – 0 Flyboys
Flyboys yet again maintained pressure for the rest of the 1st half, with great saves coming from Nathaniel, outstanding defending by Nas & Azman whom stopped at nothing to make sure RBRC weren’t going to get another goal, great vision from Hj Effendy and Hafiz whom provided well played passes up front for the midfielders and strikers. Clem and Ismail tried their all to provide the strikers with decent passes and crosses. Aziri worked hard in the midfield and was most definitely a key player for the match. Kenny and Syazwi on the otherhand gave their all, chasing that naughty fast ball (sounds kinky =P)

Halftime:
As all halftimes are all similar, it’s the usual gasping for air, players sitting down drinking and trying to focus on a good mentality for the second half, but the only difference for today’s halftime was someone sold Clem to the opponents and bought a player from the RBRC team, and also someone persuaded Roslan to play with us. Not much was changed to the formation, the newly bought player played in right midfield, Syazwi came off to make way for someone whom played in centre midfield up along with somebody, and Aziri pushed up front in an attacking midfield role.

Second Half:
Flyboys kicked off the second half with a nice fast pace which gave trouble to the opponents, sadly it meant more slipping and sliding around for everyone on the pitch. I suppose the 2nd half was pretty much Flyboys pushing and trying so hard to get an equalizer, and the best shot of the match would go to Aziri whom fired a wicked mean ball from 30 meters out, the ball left the ground elevated at 45 degree and half way out from goal the ball started to dip downwards and on goal, the ball drew closer and closer tttttiiiiiiiinnnnnggg off the crossbar and away from the goalie but in the path of Syazwi. He swung his leg and right before he could complete his shot was rudely interrupted by 3 Ninja Assassins, I mean 3 defenders. Right when Flyboys was about to turn the score around time was up and we had to accept a loss. 5 more minutes we would of scored two goals and won the game, I’d bet my boxers on it.
Sorry the second half was short, it’s cause I was mainly shocked and couldn’t believe my eyes that a magical unicorn was running around the football field, naaa actually I just can’t remember the details but hey would be cool if I did see a unicorn. Anyways all in all I’d say we played our best and had fun.
This match report was brought to you by a really tired person =)

The Scoreboard

PLAYERS
1st Half:

GK - Hero Zul-Afiq
DF - Azmi, Nasrul, Azman, Hafizh
MID - Hj Effendy, Aziri, Sofian, Ismail.
FWD - Amir, Dzulfadli.

Last game of November and Flyboys season is coming to an end. Since the Hari Raya break, Flyboys have been on an unbeaten run in the last 6 games with goals coming from the strikers and also the midfield.

The loss of the uber-reliable wing-back Julian to Cadet Flying School has been minimal as a few new players have resurfaced in the form of Aiman, Akip and Afif. All three who will soon be dispatched to the Airbus fleet.

The game started with Flyboys on the backfoot. The Vanquish football team had a few new faces in their squad but still maintaining the core group. They started the game by releasing their wingers down both flanks which had both Hafizh and Azman working quite hard in the 1st half. Both Flyboy's centreback were also busy with Nasrul 'The Rock' and Azmi making last minute sliding tackles to prevent Vanquish from scoring. Effendy Gerrard and Aziri Carrick in the centre of the park were having a titanic battle with the midfield opponents. It wasn't an easy game for them and they found it hard to boss the midfield.

Flyboys had a few chances too with Sofian and Dzulfadli shooting in the box but it wasn't easy with the opposition defender's surrounding them and their shots were left flying skywards to the RBA GC parking lot. Ismail on the left wing made a couple of good runs and some fine crosses but unfortunately their goalie, Jossrie was on form and had his penalty box covered.

Aziri also had a chance on goal and also Hafizh did a Julian by running down the flank and made a few passes and crosses.

But the best chance of the half went to Flyboy's seasoned striker, Amir when a superb pass by strike partner Dzul had him through one on one with the goalie but he took too many touches with the hope of rounding up the keeper. So because Amir was shit, he took himself off and was replaced by Syazwi.

Honestly, i wasn't paying attention to the build-up but i think someone took a pot shot at the Vanquish keeper and it bounced off his hands and Super-Sub Syazwi Serudin, evil twin and Strike Partner to Shaolin Soccer Specialist Simon, latched on to the rebound and scored. GOOOAAALLLL!!!!!!

FLYBOYS 1 - VANQUISH 0

Durng the goal, keeper Jossrie of Vanquish injured his hand so had to be substituted but he would later play another part in the game.

2ND HALF
GK - Rosli Rasit
DEF - Hafizh, Nasrul, Azmi, Azman
MID - Akip(Ismail), Aziri, Aiman, Afif(Sofian)
FWD - Simon Newn(Amir), Syazwi S(Dzul).

Fresh blood was injected into the team during the interval. Not literally blood like those vampires in New Moon which i must say was an okay movie as the wife is a big fan and so i had to accompany her to watch it. Given the circumstances i think i'd root for Jacob because he gets to be a wolf with big teeth rather than Edward who's always pale and moody but finally i chose Bella because she's a babe and hot eventhough i hated it when she used Jacob to forget about Edward. Did i mention that Bella's hot?
Oh ok, moving on.

The first move was to bring our seasoned striker, the above-mentioned Shaolin Soccer Specialist Simon Newn who's always been a good sport and always says he'll play 15 minutes but comes off after 10 minutes. The man may be over 50 but he can still play a bit and it showed when he made some pretty cool flicks on the build-up to the 2nd goal.

But before we had time to score it, Vanquish scored the equaliser with yes, Jossrie who was now a striker sliding the goal into the net from the left. Confound you Jossrie!

FLYBOYS 1 - VANQUISH 1

So okay, here comes the 2nd goal. And it was Simon i tell you, he ran what i think would be half the length of the pitch and then flicked the ball up and tried to use his head to get the ball(eventhough his head was waist-high at the time, so brave our B767 Fleet Manager, last thing we need is for him to be injured and have him answer to himself in the office) and this very complicated football technique by Simon had the defence confused. So confused that it enabled Syazwi to pounce like the wolf in the New Moon movie which is now playing in cinemas nationwide and using his left foot, he unleashed a shot to the bottom left of the net. GOOOOOAALLLLLL!!!!!!!

FLYBOYS 2 - VANQUISH 1

And just when we thought it was all over, Vanquish scored the equalizer when a wayward cross into the penalty box had their midfield player head the ball into the net.

FLYBOYS 2- VANQUISH 2

Oh man, end to end stuff here. This is like ESPN, no better, this is like Winning Eleven. With that in mind, the old guard of Sofian, Dzul, Amir and Ismail were brought in to put order in the chaos.

Sofian who is 85 years young took this opportunity to do what he often did in the days of his youth and that was to dribble pass a gazillion players. And this he did when he ghosted past the last line of defence in the box and had only the goalie to beat and this he did if it weren't for those darn nosey kids. I meant if it weren't for the goalie's last minute leg which prevented the winner. That should have gone in, man! What a dribble, what a shot, what a save!

Okay guys, this story is coming to a close. And this was when the evergreen Sofian from the half-way line released Amir, the other evergreen striker. But this time he started running like Victoria was chasing him and she's that evil Vampire from New Moon who is a hot redhead but Amir doesn't want to be bitten which is why he was legging it. He ran with the ball and this time, he refused to zig-zag the keeper. No, he's going direct to the waypoint and that was goal. No more insults from his fellow FlyBoys. A touch or two, a low show past the goalie and ladies and gentlemen, we had a winner.
GOOOOOALLLLLLLL!!!!!!
And of course, he had to give his trademark pose, finger to the horizon and the other to his left nipple. Don't ask me why but he must think he's Alan Shearer or something.

FLYBOYS 3 - VANQUISH 2

So that's the match report. Well done to everyone especially to the defence who did very well in keeping the attack at bay, to both keeper Zul-Afiq & Rosli, to the evergreen squad, to Syazwi who scored 2 and to everyone lah.

Next game is on the 1st December 2009 against RBRC members who are mostly expats i think.

Till then, majulah sukan, don't get injured, who's julian, where's my bonus & increment and when's the B777 coming.

FlyBoys 2 - BPMC 0

Apologies for the late late report. I've been busy making other reports ie police report due road car incident, course report and now finally here is the match report. Haven't done this in a while so i'm a wee bit rusty.

Right, so it was a Friday and it was the day before Halloween 09. The game was against BPMC aka Berakas Power Management Company.
It was also Julian's testimonial before he went off to finally figure out how to fly an aeroplane. Really, it was an excuse for all of us to minta belanja from Julian Hassan Kamaluddin, our indefatigable right-back and full-time kitman.

Here was the line-up:

Goalie: Zul-Afiq

Defenders: Shukrimin, Hafizh, Julian, Zul-Amali

Midfielders: Aziri, Aiman, Akip, Aziim Na.

Strikers: Sofian & Syazwi S.

Subs: Amir, Ismail, Dzulfadli, Alan Rosberg.

Kick-off:
The usual 4-4-2 formation was used because that was what we usually set up when we play Winning Eleven or PES. The first five minutes wasn't too bad. We were passing well but because of the make-shift defence our team couldn't cope with the fast wingers of our opponents. Shuk who is usually the midfield winger/creator was in the heart of the defence as was Hafizh.

Aziri who usually controls the midfield like the way he controls his HiLux was having an off-day. Aiman, our newest midfield maestro could only dribble so far but the defence had put 2 man-markers on him everytime he had the ball. Methinks rivals have been spying on our games because they seem to know our strategy. they came well prepared.
Basically, the midfield was out of shape, the strikers were blunt and our wingers couldn't get any crosses in. Their strikers were hungrier, their midfield faster and their defenders taller.
The only person that stood in the way of a first-half massacre was our first-choice goalie, Zul-Afiq.

He stood firm when the ground was shaky, he parried off all the 5 point-blank shots that were aimed at him like he was Neo from the Matrix and basically he was in 'the Zone'. Even when he was beaten by the opposing striker, his friend the cross-bar stood in the way from the ball entering the net. From a distance his performance made him look like Peter Schmeichel, sometimes he looked like Van Der Sar but what was undeniable was he was ZUL-AFIQ!!!!!!

Half-Time: FLYBOYS 0 - BPMC 0

So we were lucky to still be level in the first half and that was exactly what their player-coach, Amir told them in the dressing-room. He said with his Scottish Govan accent ala Ferguson:

"Aye lads, werr lockie in der first harf. If Zul-Afiq hadn't showed oop terrday, we wudda bin massakered by dose laddies."

Using the highly advanced coaching tool known as CRM or popularly known as 'ask the other guy if he has any suggestions', the coaching staff devised a plan that would nullify their opponents. Yes, they decided to play like Bolton Wanderers.

So 4-5-1 was the plan. Crowd the midfield and put in our secret weapon, the tallest player in the team, Alan Rosberg as lone striker. He was gigantic in height ,such that when we speak to him, the first thing we ask him is how's the weather up there.
Dzul-fadli was placed with Aiman & Aziri in midfield ala Chelsea's diamond and Ismail on the left wing. Aziim Na & Akip were taken off to have a breather and probably a fag as well. Juliana was moved to right-back and Zul-Amali was shifted to the left. Player-coach Amir was moved to the right wing where no-one could hear his rants. Hafizh & Shuks stayed put in defence.

2nd Half:
After the harsh words and the hairdryer treatment given by Sir Amir, the players felt more determined to shut his mouth and prove that no, we were not as shit as you said we were and we can do it. Flyboys kali ah.

The whistle blew and Flyboys took off. This was a different team, they wanted to win for Julian. Actually no, they wanted the kebabs Julian promised them after the game. The war cry was Kebabs! And it was working. They were running and salivating at the same time. Imagine that, the men were multi-tasking.

Aziri was controlling the midfield as was Aiman who used his dribbling skills in the last third of the pitch. Ismail was causing havoc in the defence and Dzul was stroking the ball like he stroked his......oh waittaminit, wrong report. Dzul was stroking and spraying the ball ala Xabi Alonso.
Alan was causing havoc with the now very short opposing defenders. Hah! Rasa-in kamu.

Even Julian was determined to make sure his kebab money wasn't put to waste. One thing that he wanted badly as much as he wanted his ATPL was an official FlyBoys goal. He had missed a golden opportunity a few games ago(an incident now dubbed: I'm Not Hj Fendy-Gate)and this time he wanted to make amends. So he ran all the way upfield down the wing only for that dragon-breather Amir to waste a pass to him.

At the heart of defence, they were coping well. They were now covering their markers although a lapse in concentration had an opposing striker run through on goal only for yes, you got it, ZUL-nothings-gonna-get-through-me-today-AFIQ to save it with his right hand whilst his other hand was busy sms-ing Aainaa.

Then there was the turning point of the match.
Zul-Afiq who was now thinking of signing up for DPMM FC(subject to approval from FIFA) kicked a high probing ball to the right side of the half-way line. Amir managed to deceive the balding left-back and was scot-free when he set TOGA on his run.
He ran clear the right side and started to run in-field with his marker eating his dust. He looked up, saw a running midfeilder and it was Aiman and squared the pass to him. With only his second touch on the ball and outside the penalty box, Aiman struck the ball with his right foot on whilst on the run and the ball dipped into the bottom-left corner of the net.
GOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLLLL!!!!!!!    FLYBOYS 1 - BPMC 0

Debut goal for Aiman. What a great kick from Zul-Afiq, good run from the ever-green Amir and finally a great goal from Aiman.

BPMC were shocked. They had controlled the game in the first half and deserved to be leading the game 5-0 but now they were a goal down. How quick things change in football.

FlyBoys were now on top and could smell blood. In their minds, they could hear the famous mantra,
"Finish Him".

And that they did.
A corner from Ismail had the ball cleared by BPMC only as far as Shuk.
Shuks you ask? What the heck was he doing up there? Isn't he the defender?
We don't know either but we're glad he was up there because he did one of his Zidane-esque tricks and this time he flicked the ball at an angle of 125 degrees. It landed at a rate of 80 feet per minute on Aiman's right foot and was intentionally passed to the penalty box onto Alan's foot. With one-touch of his right foot it went to the space in front of Amir and with also his first touch, Amir placed it into the bottom of the net and had the keeper floundering. GOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!

FLYBOYS 2 - BPMC 0

Minutes later, the whistle blew and FLYBOYS had won.Yayyyy, now we can eat our kebabs in London.
It was a game of two halves with Flyboys struggling in their OPC but shining in their LPC which resulted in a B- grade from the sim instructor.
Well done guys and see you on Tuesday 10th November at 4pm. Thank you Julie for being our official kitman. Hafizh has now taken over your post and also thanks for the kebabs. Pictures can be found on my FaceBook album.

Man of the Match: Zul-Afiq. Awesome performance.

Moment of the Match: the one touch football that led to the 2nd goal.

All the best to you Julian and also to Zulkhair, Aslam and Hanif. Remember, it's only 13 months. Give it your all because when you guys get back, we expect to eat at a better eatery than London Casbah. Somewhere like Excapade.

Remember, Attitude = Altitude. FlyBoys signing out. Apakan.

FlyBoys vs Futsal Crew

Good  evening/morning/afternoon ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the flyboys match report centre, my name is Azman and I will be your reporter attempting to guide you through the events that unfolded on the 26th Oct 09.
First I woke up at 10:15am, then had breakfast, coco crunch with a little milk then I brush my teeth .... Okay fast forward to 4:15pm later that day. I arrived at Padang Royal Brunei to witness a handful of flyboyzz accumulating at the main stand, glancing over to the away side and the opposition seemed all geared up and ready in their brand-spanking-new kits. It was the conflict of all conflicts, the long time ancient struggle between Flight deck and cabin. Put us together and we form a Flight Crew.. but apart it becomes FLYBOYS vs FUTSAL CREW!!
Approaching kick off time and our numbers swelled quickly as the remaining flyboys rode up in their fancy pancy cars and carefully reverse parked into their spaces. It was a good turnout as the many Flyboys superstarz were present. Hj. Effendy and Amir read out the team selection :
GK : Hj.Daud
CB : Nasrul, Hj.Effendy
RB : Juju aka Julian aka Julie
LB : Hendra
CM : Hafiizh, Jiri
RM : Clem
LM : Shukri
ST : Amir, Sofian
A strong line up and could even afford to have a star-studded bench, with Azmi, Syazwi, Ismail, Zul-Fadli and myself. Zul-Amali also  volunteered as technical coach/camera-boy on the touchline.
Ref Roslan blew the whistle and the battle commenced.  excellent start by the cockpit crew as we were retaining possession in good fashion, CBs' Nasrul and Effendy taking turns sweeping up thru the middle of the park while Hendra and Juju provided good support play to wingers Shukri and Clem. it didnt take long for us to find the opening and it came from a persistent Amir who was determined to follow the ball into the back of the net, denied once, twice by the goalie, but not a third and 1-0 the score was.
Barely a few moments later  and something happened in the penalty box resulting in a penalty award for flyboys. The big question was who would take it? memories flashback to last season (before ramadhan break) when flyboys wasted opportunities from the pen spot, a certain right back comes to mind..  YOU know who u are Juju!! nevertheless, a fearless Hj.Effendy stepped confidently up, he winked at the goalie and puckered his lips into a flying kiss, then one second later the goalie was picking the ball out of the back of his net  as he was deceived by Hj.Effendy's strange facial expressions. 2-0!!
Time for some changes, Sofian departed for Ismail, and a beaten up looking Shukri came off as his 360 + 720 degrees zidane-esque spins drove the opposition into a tackling fenzy towards him. I stepped in his place taking up CB with Nasrul. Futsal Crew took shots at goal but Hj.Daud barely had to break a sweat gathering the ball calmly. On the edge of the first half Flyboys made it a treble as Ismail raced onto a clever ball from midfield and in a one-v-one he calmly chipped the goalie to chalk himself onto the scoreboard.
Halftime came and Flyboys numbers were again replenished with the arrival of Alan Rosberg and Simon as well as Rosli and Azri who came to give support.
2nd half team :
Goalscorer Hj.Effendy decided to have a rest 2nd half but at the same time wanted to stand between the goal posts wearing gloves, while Azmi teamed up with me at CB, Nasrul moved into CM with Jiri, Alan RM, Ismail LM, and Simon partnered Zul-fadli up top.
Futsal Crew with their pride hurt restarted the match strongly, far too strongly tho when one of them decided to write his name into my shin using his adidas studs. Fortunately no major damage was done apart from an unpleasant stinging feeling in my leg. However the most incredible tackle was made by someone on the flyboys side who tackled....wait for it.....someone else on the flyboys side. Yes, it was the clash of the titans, the skies open up as the earth tremored and shock waves reverberated throughout the pitch when Azmi tackled Hendra. Azmi came out unscathed but Hendra needed some treatment and rest bite after being caught on the wrong side of a man-sandwich between a couple of cabin crew attackers and teammate Azmi.
In the midst of all that human carnage we actually added to our scoreline when a flyboys midfielder latched onto one of my skywards canon ball clearances and released pacy winger Ismail to come running down the left flank and curling his effort in from an acute angle. It was a masterclass of counter attacking football reminiscent of some weird looking skinny french guy named Ngok or something.
But the scoring wasnt over as we broke again down the leftside and the cross put in fell into the path of Sofian who cooly released his dipping effort from the egde of the pen box nestling the ball into bottom left corner of the goal. 5-0 it was and cabin crew could not find a way back.
The match was supposed to be chance for revenge for the Crew, but turned out to be a humbling defeat at the hands of Flyboys' best performance of the season so far without the help of any beach balls.
Man-Of-The-Match : every Flyboy who played  in the match, as we were all soooo good we even had to tackle each other to give them a chance!!

Apologies to any offences and miss-outs in reporting, good luck with the next match guys.

FlyBoys VS RBA REJAX

Match Report

Flyboys vs RBA Rejax

Wembley Stadium 5 p.m. Sunday 18 October 2009

Once again the glorious Flyboys, complete with their army of loyal fans crowded into Wembley Stadium to do battle with their arch enemy, the Evil Empire that is RBA Rejax.
Coach Amir and Captain Hj Effendy had decided on a special plan for the team squad – if you showed up, you played. With a degree of cunning rarely seen in Brunei football, Hj Effendy decided to confuse both RBA Rejax and Flyboys by putting a complete novice in goal, stoutly supported by 4 defenders. This was surprising enough, but when the team took positions for the opening whistle, Flyboys only had one mid field player – Jerry. The rest were all goal hungry strikers just waiting to pounce.
So the starting line up was:

Hj Effendy

(17) Zul Amali (21) Shukriman (39) Hafizh (4) Julian

(25) Jerry

(11) Giggs (7) Aiman (55) Syazwi (26) Zulfadli (?)Ismail

The Ref blew his whistle to start the Titanic struggle. Flyboys were away to fantastic start with a hungry, fit strike force laying siege to the Rejax goal. No more were Flyboys a group who resorted to the boring long lob for some poor exhausted guy to chase. This time, Flyboys were stringing together low accurate passes in close play that clearly gave them the upper hand. Rejax were definitely on the back foot, with many minutes ticking by with the ball kept firmly in Rejax’s half of the pitch. Short, sharp, accurate passing, running off the ball for each other and creative play were the hallmark of Flyboys in the first half.

While all this was going on, Flyboys novice goalie was signing autographs and complaining of a sore back, a sore leg, a bad roster and several other things. This was a good thing because at least the ball was down the other end of the pitch and at least Hj Effendy hadn’t fallen asleep.
Despite the attacking nature of Flyboy’s play, Rejax were always capable of deathly counter attacks, and several times, the fast legs and determined tackling of Julian, Shukriman and Zul Amali coupled with the solid blocking play of Hafizh to thwart their efforts.

Several of the least memorable parts of the first half were when Amir forgot how to do a Throw In and Syazwi forgot the Off-Side rule.
Both feet on the ground Amir. Not one foot on the ground with the other in the air like a reject from the ballet company. Both feet on the ground.
Syazwi, next time we fly together, we are going to use the time in the cruise to make sure you understand the Offside rule, and the necessity of getting back on side. Remember to bring your boots to the Flight Deck.
Anyway, despite several shots at goal, the Ref blew the whistle for half time with the score at nil all.

Half time saw some clever tactical moves made by Flyboys. Amir came off and was replaced by Cabin Crew Kairal or Hairal – I never learned which. This was very important because it meant that Amir could take a break and monitor the game from the touchline while Hj Effendy could monitor the game from the goal. Monitoring the game from both on and off the pitch – that’s clever tactics for you.

All this cleverness however came to nothing because we were slow to start, while Rejax leapt at Flyboys from the start of the second half.
They had cunningly replaced their strikeforce with some very fast players who took advantage of our defenders weariness.
At the 52nd minute point, Rejax made a half hearted attack that would have come to nothing in the first half when Flyboys defence was fresh. But now our defenders were tired and half a pace behind the play. This gave Rejax the space they needed and a low shot from the right side of the penalty area left Hj Effendy completely wrong footed, and the ball went into the net in the far corner. It wasn’t exactly against the run of play, but it was definitely more than Rejax deserved. Regardless, the score was now
Rejax 1 : Flyboys 0

Eleven minutes later, Rejax scored a brilliant goal. The right winger put a searching ball across to the left wing who sprinted onto it, ran at the goal, composed himself and blasted the ball into the net from just inside the Penalty Area. Hj Effendy had no chance.
Rejax 2 : Flyboys 0

At this point the stadium started emptying. The masses of Rejax supporters, confident of the victory, left early to begin celebrating. The less loyal Flyboy supporters left to go home and have a good cry.
The fans who stayed were rewarded with a come back that will go in the record books.

By now the Rejax defence were relaxed and confident of victory, while Flyboys finally got into gear and realised they were playing for pride and glory. The defence started merging with the attackers and several fantastic runs by Julian and Zul Amali down the left wing were kept out by pure dumb luck.
But luck never lasts for ever, and eventually Flyboys got their reward. Yet another raid down the left wing resulted in Hafizh in the Penalty Area with both time and space. In the 63rd minute of play he composed himself and placed the ball firmly into the back of the net from just to the left of the goal centre. GOAL!!!!!!!
Rejax 2 : Flyboys 1

Flyboys fans smelled blood and wanted more from their strikers. The cheering reached a crescendo as Flyboys, now firmly in command peppered the goal from both long and short range.
Rejax didn’t know how to respond to the increase in application from the Flyboys and resorted to desperate, last minute defending. That was never going to be successful enough for them to survive to the final whistle.
Eventually in the 73rd minute of play the ball went to our half time Cabin Crew Substitute Khairal.
He was about 5 meters out side the Penalty Area just to the right of centre.
He took aim.
He struck
The ball flew
The goalie dived
The net bulged
A brilliant goal from long range in to the top far corner of the goal.
What a little beauty !!!!!!
The female supporters were screaming with delight and the security staff had to forcibly stop them from running on the field to join the celebrations.
Rejax 2 : Flyboys 2

The final minutes of the game were desperate. Flyboys wanted a winner while Rejax desperate to hang on to the draw. The men on both sides gave their all in the struggle for glory.
But then the Ref blew the whistle for the last time.

Flyboys came off the field like champions, Rejax came off looking like people who had just escaped defeat by the tiniest of margins.
The scoreline said “2 - 2 : Draw”
Those who were there knew that in this encounter, Flyboys were the champions.

Flyboys 2 - RBA Finance 1

The month long fasting break and two weeks of RAYA is long gone now, the aftermath of those whom went to a lot of open houses hopefully won’t have any effects on the pitch. Our second match of the new season saw Flyboys play against the RBA Finance. The day was a Monday, a blistering hot Monday I must add, Flyboys in yellow, Finance in red. Flyboys were dominating the finance team even before the start of the match with our numbers, fourteen sweaty yellow players to a five in red.
Flyboys with a lot of time to kick the ball around, have some laughs, introducing our selves in fear the long break led to someone’s name being forgotten, see two monkeys chase the ball before Julian lead the warm ups with beautiful leg stretching positions.

Hj Effendy gives a nice short speech and gives the formation as follows:

In the gloves : Zulafiq
The Defence : Nathaniel (rb) Azmi & Azman (cb) Julian (lb)
The Midfield : Aiman (rw) Hj Effendy & Hendra (cm) Ismail (lw)
The Strikers : Kenny & Amir

The flyboys subs Allan, Zulamali, Zulkhair and Aslam saw them selves playing the first half of the game with only they were on loan ($50/min each) to the opposition to help make up their numbers. Woohoo means we get to get the match started, downside no subs for those who planed to play for 4-5mins =P

It’s a late kick off, but the boys in yellow apply the pressure at the blow of the whistle, and perhaps it was much easier in doing so due to the finance team despite having our subs were still short of three players. It was a pretty fast paced game five minutes into the games which saw great spinning god knows what moves their called by Amir to trick the defenders and unleash a beautiful simple pass to Kenny whom slotted the first goal of the game but that’s when the blistering hot weather and all the extra weight gained during the festive season came to haunt both teams. Eight minutes after the first goal by Kenny we got to see another one by the tall striking partner of Amir yet again. Fifteen minutes into the games and a striker broke pass the flyboys defenders, and unleashed a fast low ball pass Zulafiq and into the net.

After conceding, Zulafiq played extremely well and took care of all the shots on goal, Azmi & Azman made sure any long balls towards the middle was taken care of with the good support of their fellow defenders Nathaniel and Julian whom were fast on the ball if a player was to break free and played good passes up field. Hendra played a like Masherano in the centre of the field alongside Hj Effendy who played extremely well to provide Gerrard like passing. Aiman and Ismail played fast paced winger like action when they weren’t so breatheless, got some shots on goal unfortunately were denied by the Finance goalie. Kenny on the other hand was happily attacking the goal of the Finance goalie in search of a hat trick. Last but not least Amir was to dizzy to watch with his ballet movement twisting and turning around when ever he had the chance to do so. Allan, Zulamali, Zulkhair and Aslam played well for the Finance team during the first half and hopefully the Finance team were glad to have them.

After the halftime break Allan, Zulkhair and Aslam returned to the flyboys lineup from their first half loan, and flyboys saw everyone play except Ismail and Zulamali who where on the sidelines as subs. The second half didn’t last long though, time waits for no men and the game had to be ended in five-ten minutes of the start of the second half due to respect for the main religion of Brunei. Which is most likely a good thing cause the finance team were pressing hard on flyboys and came really close to scoring a couple of occasions during the second half. All in all was a good game we had fun, no intense tackles were committed, no players were injured.

Lastly sorry if got any of the info wrong or if this report was to boring to read, ill just blame my lovely 360 front flip and landing headfirst during the first game of our new season against the cabin crew.

Ismail xoxo

FLYBOYS vs FAMILY GADONG

FLYBOYS 1

FAMILY GADONG 3

Here we are folks, the final game of the season. Flyboys assembled at the RBRC grandstand looking to round off the season with a good performance and positive result before the festive break. Opponents today are team Family Gadong, of which our defensive stalwart Hj. Hendra will line up with. Flyboys line up from the back was a bit more younger and inexperienced than usual without the presence of key defensive players Hj. Effendy and Nasrul who were not able to make it. So there was full debuts for newbiez Aslam and Zulkhair with Hanif taking a spot on the bench.

Rosli started in goal, R to L at the back was Zul-Amali, Zulkhair, Azman and Aslam. Midfield R to L Ismail, Irwanizam, Jiri and Syazwi. Upfront saw the return of fox-in-the-box Amir with strike partner Zul-Fadli.

The game kicked-off with Team Family Gadong sporting a yellow and black kit similar to the Flyboys 2nd kit. Early in the half, Flyboys were dealt a serious blow as Irwanizam, in his efforts to fend off a couple of opposing players fell awkwardly under a challenge and stayed down for sometime needing some treatment. This in fact was the end of his participation forcing the first change of the game to be made by Flyboys with the introduction of Julian taking up the void central midfield position.

Team FG stated their intent early on with a couple of lofted balls over the top to catch out a Flyboys defence lacking in menacing pace. Their strategy soon paid dividends as one such ball was unable to be intercepted by either Azman or Aslam and a senior Team FG player made a prospective attempt on goal which initially looked as if it was over, but dipped in under the bar at the wrong moment for Flyboys and beyond the reach of Rosli. 1-0 to Team FG.

Capt Amir made a commanders decision to switch Aslam and Julian. The change proved to be good as Aslam got more of the ball in midfield and Julian added some much needed pace to the backline. Soon flyboys started to take the initiative and push forward. There was a period where Flyboys were winning a succession of cornerkicks which were well delivered but Flyboys were unable to capitalize on.

However, the pace of team FG’s frontline continued to cause problems, as their goalie made a huge punt up the pitch, their striker was quickest to it making a run out wide, Zulkhair chased him down as Azman tracked back to catch his strike partner making a similar run to the far post. Goalie Rosli seemed to be in two minds whether or not to close the advancing striker down or stay on his line. It didn’t matter though as the striker whipped the ball across the goal to give his strike partner an easy tap in to double their lead.

Like a wounded beast, flyboys responded aggressively with positive forward play. The link-up between midfield and strikers was good. The best piece of play was when Amir found himself running wide right with the ball and making an excellent cross to pick out Zul-Fadli who rose well in front of his marker and diverted his header just above the crossbar. Not long after there was another glorious opportunity for Flyboys to peg one back, when Julian disguised his freekick to pass wide left to Syazwi who cut inside and lashed a deadly ball into the box but just behind several advancing Flyboys attackers. The half ended with the scoreline reading a sore 2-0.
2nd half

After the break, Flyboys switched to a 4-5-1 formation, Julian shifted inside to the heart of defence with Zulkhair moving to LB and Ismail playing in front of him on the left wing. Riduan who was late cause he was watching an ‘Orphan’ at the Mall slotted in at RM and Ali also came in to play CM. Flyboys continued to create openings in the 2nd half and there was a half-chance early on for Riduan when Julian delivered a long ball from a freekick, Rudy couldn’t make sufficient contact later saying that he wasn’t panas yet. Somewhat against the run of play though, Team FG added another.

Azman attempted to clear the ball but it fell kindly to an FG player who passed to his advancing teammate who looked as if he was offside, but it wasn’t given and despite Rosli coming out quickly to block the shot, it was 3-0. Flyboys kicked off and again responded by pressing forward. Once again our link up play between midfield and attack was good, as Jiri made a trademark mazy run thru the heart of the Team FG defence ignoring calls for him to pass the ball, he made a wonderful reverse pass to send Ali thru who made an equally excellent diagonal run from an onside position. Finding himself in a one v one position, Ali’s shot was just wide aiming for the bottom far post. When a goal did come for Flyboys, the move started from deep in our own half as Zul-Amali picked up a loose ball, he played a quick on-two with Azman and released the ball to Ali who unselfishly squared the ball to Amir. He took an instinctive but tame effort at goal which looked as if it was gonna roll softly into the warm hands of the FG goalie, but as if the ball had been sprayed with WD-40, it slipped thru his hands between his legs and crossed the goal line! And Flyboys pegged one back.

Hanif was introduced into the match replacing Zulkhair at RB who had a good 2nd half. He immediately found himself in action as Team FG started a few attacks from his side, but Julian was able to plug the gaps and Rosli came out when he was needed. Flyboys found themselves getting fouled on various occasions and were awarded a freekick just outside the box. Jiri stepped up to hit one and made an ambitious but affective lob which the goalie parried away for the corner.

As the match winded down, Flyboys started to leave gaps in the back leading to chances for Team FG but there was some good tracking back by Riduan to help out the defence. Towards the end of the match there was a corner kick and the lofted ball fell into the path of Syazwi who came back in, he took one touch to set himself up and just as he was about to pull the trigger the No.6 Team FG player came in ninja-kung-fu-style-two-footed and took away syazwi’s legs. Fearing the worst some Flyboys came to his aid only to be bemused by the sight of Syazwi rolling over in light laughter. The good news was that he was okay and the better news was that he had won us a late penalty.

Amir stepped up to take the ball and place it on the spot as in the distance a confident-looking Julian marched up wanting to try his luck at glory shouting out the words “Im not Hj. Effendy!!” in reference to the last penalty for the Flyboys which Capt Effendy shot wide.

Julian stepped up and wrote his name in the history books of Flyboys Football as the penalty smashed into the top corner with the keeper well and truly undeniably beaten....is what I would’ve liked to report, BUT he skied it high over the bar and ref Roslan blew his whistle to the relief of Team FG..

Man-Of-The-Match : Julian.. yes despite the inglorious pen miss which will live long in Flyboys history, his overall play was as usual excellent particularly when playing as makeshift centre back for the 2nd half away from his normal right back slot.

And so this ends our season thus-far as we break for the Holy month of Ramadhan. Once again a great thank you for those who participated and showed their support for Flyboys football whether you are putting on the boots and having a kick about or simply reading the blog and filling up 123.45MHz with your valued opinions. Hope to see a growing participation of players when we come back.

Please do accept my apologies for inconsistencies in reporting.
Have a happy and safe Ramadhan.

NOTOC

Hopefully we'll have more players in this up coming game esp knowing
we all will be celebrating the fasting month a day or two after the game, which means there will be no game at least in the next 30 days.

The Scoreboard

Better luck next time guys... anyway thanks for coming.

FLYBOYS 0 PERUMAHAN 1

With the English Premier League just starting over the weekend, back in Brunei the Flyboys season is coming to an end (or short fasting/festive break) the 2nd last game before Ramadhan was played against team Perumahan sporting a bright blue kit.

Once again flyboys numbers were lacking in the beginning, however this time we could afford the luxury of A sub, in the form of supersub/secret weapon : HocK .

The line up looked like this Goalkeeper : Capt Effendy seems to be enjoying his role as first choice goalkeeper these days,

Defence : RB Zul-Amali, LB Juliana, CB Wazien and Azman,

Midfield : RM Azrol, LM Shuk, CM Jiri and Sofian,

Strikers : Kenny and Zul-fadli

1st Half :

The game had a bit of a cagey start as both teams tried to impose themselves. Flyboys struggled to create clear cut openings and at times found themselves on the backfoot on more than one occasion. Perumahan focused most their attacks down the flyboys right hand side, Zul-Amali had the impossible task of marking 2 players at a time. Fortunately though when they did break thru sweeper Wazien put his pace to good use mopping up the backline. Perumahan took several potshots at Flyboys goal from outside the box but not with enough quality to beat Hj. Effendy.

There was a succession of foul throws in the first half, mostly commited by Perumahan however one or two of the flyboys were also caught by the sharp eye of Ref Roslan. There were a couple of scary moments when the Flyboys backline was caught offguard and a Perumahan player found himself free in the box, Azman commited himself to a sliding tackle making no contact with the ball but neither with the player, who decided to go to ground. Shameful appeals for a penalty from the Perumahan players were justifiably waved away by the Ref. One moment also saw Julian coming across to cover the right side of the defence and the ball inadvertently made contact with a part of his arm, and again appeals were shunted. Quite quickly the first half came to a close with neither team looking close to breaking the deadlock.

2nd Half

Some reshuffling was done as Nasrul arrived to take his place in the heart of defence along side Azman. Newestest Flyboys Rosli and Aslam were also to make appearances with Rosli taking the Goalkeepers gloves away from a relieved Hj. Effendy now free to take up his favoured position of central midfield maestro. Wazien shifted to RB, Shuk to striker partnering Kenny and supersub Hock was introduced to LM with Zul-Amali and Sofian making way.

Shuk’s positional change to free roaming Striker seemed to be a great move as he became a central figure in most of flyboys attacks. The most memorable moment was when Shukrina audaciously attempted to lob the goalkeeper from a range of almost 40 yards only for the ball to drop cruelly onto the crossbar with the goalie well and truly beaten... surely would’ve been a contender for goal of the season. As per usual these days flyboys reserved their best for the 2nd half and quickly took control of proceedings. The introduction of Nasrul tightened whatever loose ends there were in the Flyboys backline and allowed the defence to hold a high line with Azman and Julian taking in turns to make short effective forays to support the midfield.

However, with things looking peachy for Flyboys, disaster struck 10 mins into the 2nd half as a nothing ball forward was failed to be cleared on two occasions and a persistent Perumahan player lashed a venomous ball from distance aiming for the top corner of the net...Rosli having little to do before this was caught offguard as the vicious strike whisked thru his hands and flyboys were 1-0 down. Not to be deterred the flyboys mentality in these situations was simple...ATTACK!!!!

And Halfway thru the 2nd half Kenny was given the best chance to break even as a glorious thru ball found him unmarked bursting thru the heart of the Perumahan defence, with only the keeper to beat, Kenny’s effort was disastrously saved by their plucky goalie. Flyboys continued to push forward strongly at every available opportunity crowding out the Perumahan penalty box with every set piece play. A freekick was won just on the outside righthand of Perumahan box, Hj. Effendy stepped up to whip a great ball into the area and Shuk rose the highest but his header was high.

Azrol also followed up with a diving far-post header from a searching deep cross by left back/winger Julian. One of the last clear chances came courtesy of a corner kick for Flyboys, lofted into the area, Perumahan failed to clear their lines and Azman tried with a trademark overhead kick which fell tamely into the hands of the Perumahan goalie.

With the many advances of Flyboys team, major gaps opened up for Perumahan to exploit on the counter. Far too often the Flyboys defence was caught against the odds in 3 v 2 situations but the defence remained solid under the watchful defending of Nasrul and Perumahan failed to capitilise in situations that favoured them. The last kick of the game was an overhead pass from hj. Effendy to release fast runner Wazien but the whistle blew before he could get to it and so the result ended in a disappointing but spirited 1-0 defeat to flyboys.

Once again flyboys didn’t get the result that the performance merited, but so long as everyone had a good run out and enjoyed themselves, the Flyboys spirit shall remain strong. Last game will be on Thursday 20th. For those who are unable to make this, thank you for participating and hope to see you again after festive break.

Man-Of-The-Match : Shukrimin...had a quiet first half on the Left midfield slot, but became Flyboys central attacking figure in the 2nd half, unfortunate not to score wonder goal.

Please accept my apologies for any discrepancies in reporting.

NOTOC

Hopefully we will see more players turning up for the match as it could be a
testimonial match for
Julian, who will be leaving us for UK to start his flying school.
( Farewell party right after the match, kan Julian )

FlyBoys vs Traffic Services

After two weeks away from the beautiful game, match day is once again upon us. FlyBoys turn up 13 men strong, braving the haze and the appalling air quality.
To begin the game, FlyBoys has to make do with 11 players. Not to be perturbed, Hj Effendy organises the team to maximise the limited resources.

1st Half Formation:
Goalkeeper: Hj Effendy
Defence: A changeup defensively with Wazien playing as sweeper and Hendra just ahead of him. Julian down the right back position and local import Izzat playing as left back
Midfield: The familiar matchup of Jerry and Hafiizh in the middle with Sofian (returning from injury) and Riduan supporting down the left and right flanks respectively
Striker: Syazwi and Ali were tasked with the goal scoring

The whistle blows
Donning their familiar bright yellow kit, FlyBoys try to set the pace early in the game. However the opposition midfield is working just as hard to the same end. Much of the first half sees the opposition racing down the left and right flanks or attempt cheeky chips over the head of the last defender. The FlyBoys defence however are equal to these multiple attempts and stand strong.
The midfield partnership of Jerry and Hafiizh give the opposition midfielders a run for their money, releasing balls for both wingers as well as the strikers. A different approach is taken to get to goal; with the speed of Ismail lacking up front, the strikers receive balls to their feet and try to hold it up while support gallop upfield. To mix it up, Ali and Syazwi take on the opposition defence getting as far as the penalty box but get crowded out by the backtracking opposition defence and are unable to pull the trigger.
The opposition find themselves in good shooting positions just outside the FlyBoys penalty box and when the defence are not able to close the attacker down quick enough Hj Effendy comfortably handles the shots and in one particular incident he palms the ball up in the air and proceeds to kung fu kick it as it comes down (dust in his eyes he claims).
Controversy rears its ugly head; the opposition claiming two handballs committed inside the FlyBoys penalty box but referee Roslan ruling in favour of FlyBoys in each occasion.
Izzat and Julian are galloping up the lines supporting the attacks and in one attack Julian, put through by Sofian (still niggling with his long overdue hamstring) finds himself one on one with a defender. A feint and short sprint later Julian is barrelling towards goal with two defenders nipping at his heels, he shoots for the near post but the goalkeeper manages to react fast enough to palm the ball away for a corner kick.
FlyBoys find themselves with corner kicks galore but still unable to convert the chances in the air or the plentiful scrambles inside the penalty box.

Goal! FlyBoys 1 – 0 Traffic Services
30 minutes into the game, Hafiizh wins a free kick for the team by managing to pressure the opposition defender into committing a handball. FlyBoys players flood the penalty box seeking the elusive first goal. Hafiizh curls the ball towards the far post and manages to find Jerry who unselfishly passes it to Riduan. At this point there is a big mass of bodies in between Riduan and the goal but by some stroke of genius/luck/skill he manages to find a gap and curl the ball into the bottom left corner of goal. First blood FlyBoys.
Despite the goal, Flyboys continue to look for the second. The opposition tear apart the defence with lightning quick runs from their midfielders but FlyBoys stand their ground and are able to squash the attacks.

Half Time
A collective sigh of relief sounds as Azman and Ismail appear from the car park. Lacking the bountiful cool box of Zulafiq and the ever optimistic rants of Amir doesn’t seem to deter the team as they hydrate and scheme new ways of penetrating the opposition defence. Another changeup in the formation with 4-5-1 touted to be the formation to contain the opposition midfield. New arrivals Azman and Ismail make an appearance as well as imports Salleh (MCC) and Fakhri (Cabin crew). Hendra bows out due to work commitments in the evening.

2nd Half Formation:
Goalkeeper: Hj Effendy
Defence: Wazien remains as sweeper with Azman playing his super effective free roaming stopper position. Julian on the right and goal scorer Riduan playing on the left.
Midfield: The fabulous five with Izzat plying his trade on the left flank; Salleh, Jerry and Fakhri flooding the centre of the park and Hafiizh playing on the right.
Striker: Ismail finds himself all on his lonesome up front

It Begins:

The second half sees a revitalised FlyBoys side; the formation effectively quashing the opposition midfield, with Salleh and Fakhri standing strong in the centre and Jerry rushing up to support Ismail.
The opposition defence find themselves sitting deeper and under more pressure. FlyBoys find themselves in opportune positions, Fakhri managing to find space on the edge of the box to pull the trigger. He unleashes a stinger of a shot but the goalie is equal to it.
Under constant pressure, Civilian traffic find they are unable to run with the ball from a defensive position into a more attacking one and resort to hoofing balls up the length of the field in hopes of a striker latching onto them. Azman finds himself dealing with these with ease, not only managing to head them away but also to find teammates.
In one sequence of play Julian loses possession as he tries to run up the flank with the ball, leaving a gaping hole in the right back position. The opposition midfield slots the ball through the gap and an attacker manages to latch onto it. With 3 defenders bearing down on him he takes the shot early, curling it high in hopes of looping it over the goalkeeper. The ball soars high above Hj Effendy and hits the crossbar and bounces out. FlyBoys find themselves lucky to still be ahead.

The penalty:
Halfway through the second half, Jerry is put through on goal by persons unknown. He runs goal wards shielding the defender away with his body, just as he’s about to shoot the defender sweeps him off his feet from behind. Referee Roslan stops play and calls a penalty, at this point there are grins all around. Goalkeeper Hj Effendy trots all the way from the other end of the field to take the penalty. FlyBoys are feeling smug up until Hj Effendy winds up, boots the ball towards the bottom left corner and misses. He turns around and offers and apologetic grin. In a post match interview Hj Effendy says,
“..even the best of players miss sometimes...”
Being one goal up isn’t the best time to rest on their laurels and FlyBoys continue pushing for their second goal only to be denied only by the incredible efforts of the opposing goalkeeper. Ismail finding that playing on his own up front equates to a lot of space he has to exploit. Throughout the half he runs zigzags to confound the defenders, which it did.
Another scare for FlyBoys after a counter attack finds the defence outnumbered and out of position. The attacking winger flies down the left wing and cuts the ball back. The striker then passes the ball to the far side of the penalty box to an open teammate who swings at the ball as it arrives. The shot is true and hits the left FlyBoys post bounces and flies across the goal line into the right post and then into Hj Effendys’ arms.
A few minutes after the major scare, FlyBoys still probing for the second goal to put the game out of reach and referee Roslan blows the final whistle. Game set and match, FlyBoys.

End of:
Despite lacking numbers, the team showed great spirit and determination playing a team that was faster and had more subs than they knew what to do with. A number of foul throws but we’ll put that down to being rusty after the two week hiatus. Two more games until the season takes a break for Ramadhan, one on 17 and another either 20 or 21. Hopefully more players are available for these games.
